In drought years, fall colors tend to come earlier and this year is shaping up to do just that. I may try to go for a quick three day weekend a little earlier in the month if all works out.
Colorado in the fall is one of my favorite times of the year! Every year around August when a cooler day hits, I think about how those beautiful aspen trees will be turning yellow, orange and even red in September and late October. Some years are better than others. And the timing can vary greatly from year to year. What I wanted to do with this guide is to give a list of my favorite photography spots for fall colors in Colorado. In general, Colorado fall foliage tends to start north and move south.
Rain, wind, sunshine and snow all photoxhoot into when leaves turn and drop, so take this is a very rough guide based on my limited time of photographing the fall colors for the past 15 years or so. Also know that every photographer views peak differently. One photographer may be interested in grand vistas which require most of the trees to still have color, while another photographer may be interested in more intimate scenes and likes to shoot when leaves have blanketed the ground.
So take the peak colors with a grain of salt. Hopefully the locations here help you explore new areas yourself! I hope to update this regularly around the fall to give updates on new locations and maybe even fall color trip reports if I am able to.
The Maroon Bells are often considered the most photographed mountains in all of North America. However, last year some changes were implemented. There are now ropes keeping people from the edge of the lake. There are still plenty of spots to get those iconic peaks draped in their fall photoshoot. If the lake-side spots are all taken, try walking around the lake. Sometimes I enjoy leaving the crowd behind to photishoot a shot from a more unique angle with Maroon Creek in the foreground.

That said, there are some amazing spots to find that Colorado fall color. The popular hiking trails in Glacier Gorge and the Bear Lake area are a great place to start! Over-use and even i were becoming a problem at Hanging Lake, so a new permit system is now in place. Another favorite of mine, there are so many little roads to explore through this area. Lizard Head Pass in particular has some amazing views of the golden covered landscapes.
Getting off the highway and exploring will find all sorts of waterfalls, interesting aspen trees and other things to photograph along the way. I particularly like country road along South Fork Mineral Creek as it has a number of aspens, but also a lot of marsh lands that make interesting foregrounds.
Off road there are some pretty amazing waterfalls to be found as well! The above locations are some of my favorite spots in all of Colorado! Also, there are plenty of trees if you want more of a forest look. The photos here look great anytime but sunset is our favorite time!
They are not as famous as Red Rocks but just as beautiful! I personally prefer this spot because there are less people and I feel like there are more options for pictures here. We love this new spot that we started to visit. It gives us a great option for a garden setting south of Denver. With our annual permit, we can visit anytime from sunrise to sunset, but we need a 5-day notice. We love photo sessions at the Denver Botanic Gardens because it has so much to offer.
We have to schedule a week before and we have to keep an eye out for early closures. We only schedule shoots here during the week because of the crowds that we have to work around during the weekends. Red Rocks is absolutely beautiful and looks incredible around sunset. But we need a weeks notice for a permit to have our photo shoot there. Once upon a time this was our go to spot for forest and mountains within the Denver metro area.
But over the past year JeffCo has placed barricades all along the beautiful lookout points and we are no longer able to access them. It's still beautiful and we could still have some nice views, but it's no longer the same.

Grand View and Book Cliffs View are among the most popular sites. The Dallas Divide is a high mountain pass in southwestern Colorado near Telluride. It is on State Route 62 and provides stunning mountain views. This unpaved road is best traveled in an SUV or truck with some clearance.
Here you will find some of the best views of the San Juan Mountains and countless photo opportunities. Shrine Pass is a mountain pass at an elevation of 11, feet in central Colorado. There is a narrow, unpaved road that leads through the pass to provide some amazing views. The road is usually best traveled in a 4-wheel-drive, but in good conditions it can be traveled by just about any car.
Chimney Rock National Monument in southwestern Colorado is home to an archaeological site and the feet-tall Chimney Rock, as well as Companion Rock. The rock formations and rugged scenery are excellent photographic subjects. Glenwood Canyon is a mile canyon along the Colorado River in western Colorado with canyon walls that reach as high as 1, feet above the river. This beautiful area is easy to access with Interstate 70 being right there.
Rest areas along Interstate 70 provide trail access to explore on foot. The Hanging Lake Rest Area provides access to the stunning lake and waterfalls in the area. The park includes more than 30 miles of hiking trails for exploring the forest and mountains. Roxborough State Park is located outside of Denver and is known for its beautiful red rock formations. The park also includes woodlands, prairies, and abundant wildlife.
There are several trails that provide plenty of great views, including Fountain Valley Overlook. It features beautiful sandstone canyons, natural arches, spires and rock formations. Rattlesnake Arches is a section that includes a large number of natural arches. Throughout the world only Arches National Park in Utah has a higher concentration of natural arches. Many hiking trails provide access to great views. The towns of Durango, Silverton, and Pagosa Springs are common starting points for trips into the wilderness.
There are several hiking trails available, and the Ice Lakes hike is a great option. Dinosaur National Monument is in northwestern Colorado and extends a little bit into Utah. Although the area is known for its dinosaur fossils, the landscape is quite spectacular too. The Green River Canyon is a great photographic subject. Several different roads and hiking trails provide access to the area.
Located near Aspen, the Maroon Bells are two peaks that are among the most-photographed locations in Colorado. With the beautiful lake in the foreground, this is an iconic shot. The area is extremely popular. During the summer you can access it by car before AM or after PM, but between — you will need to take a bus.
If you like beautiful mountain lake shots this is a place you will want to visit. It is about 90 miles southwest of Denver. Garden of the Gods — There is a reason that Garden of the Gods in Colorado Springs is one of the top-rated parks in the country.
It is easily accessible with paved walking trails. Pikes Peak sits on the west side of Garden of the Gods and the rocks run north and south.
While I usually like to photograph into a sunrise or sunset, with how the rocks light up in the early morning and alpine glow on Pike Peak make sunrise my preferred shooting time at this park. Outside of Calhan, this park is full of natural wonders. I would recommend going to photograph here at sunset and then staying and enjoying a starry sky.
Sneffels — Just outside of Ridgway, Colorado is some of the best photography opportunities in the state of Colorado. The Sneffels Mountains dominate the scenery here.
Follow highway 62 out of town and you will be rewarded with many photographic spots along the way.
